5. Karen Wetterhahn

‘The story of Karen Wetterhahn.

‘Essentially, she was a chemistry professor at Dartmouth.

She was working with an organic mercury compound that was relatively unknown at the time.

A drop spilled on her gloved hand. No big deal usually. Turns out dimethyl mercury penetrates latex gloves really quickly, and a drop on the hand is a death sentence.

She slipped into a coma about 6 months later and then died.

The really terrifying part is the description of her coma.

5. 캐런 웨터한

케런 웨터한은 다트머스 대학교의 화학 교수였다.

그녀는 당시 잘 알려지지 않았던 유기 수은 화합물을 연구하고 있었다.

그런데 한 방울을 장갑 낀 손에 흘리고 말았다. 보통은 별 일 아니었겠지만,

디메틸 수은이 매우 바르게 라텍스 장갑을 뚫고 들어가 그녀의 손에 닿았다.

그것만으로도 그녀는 사형선고를 받은 것이나 다름 없게 되었다.

그녀는 곧 코마에 빠졌으며 6개월 뒤 사망했다.

 

정말 무서운 부분은 그녀의 코마에 대한 것이다.

그녀의 학생 중 한 명이 묘사한 것에 따르면 그것은 일반적인 그런 코마가 아니었다.

그녀가 고통으로 몸부림칠 때 그녀의 남편은 눈물이 그녀의 눈에서 흘러 내리는 것을 볼 수 있었다.

나는 코마인데도 그녀가 고통을 느낄 수 있는지 물어 보았을 때,

의사는 그럴 리가 없다며, 그녀의 뇌가 고통을 인지하지 못 할 것이라고 했었다.

 

 

4. Scuba dive

‘This was a few years ago on a night scuba dive.

 There were 8 of us in the group including our dive master and his assistant.

 We had just finished our dive and were gathered up in a circle ready to ascend and get out of the water when my dive master freezes.

He takes his flashlight and pointing it outside our circle of divers he catches something circling us with the beam.

Turns out it was a 12 foot long great white shark.

‘At this point half of the group are trying to keep the shark illuminated as it circles us and remarkably everyone stayed calm.

The only things going through my mind were iterations of these two thoughts,

“don’t look like a yummy delicious fatty seal, and that I hope I taste terrible.”

‘My dive master gets our attention and slowly puts his thumb up and then makes an upward motion.

We all begin to ascend and the shark kept with us until we were maybe 10 feet from the surface.

Then it turned off into the darkness and was gone.

3. Babysitter

‘So one day, this girl was called over to babysit.

She did it a lot for these people, so it was routine for her.

Anyways, she was told to put the kids to bed at 9, and she did.

After she put the [kids] to bed, she started watching TV and doing homework, waiting for the parents to come home.

But then, she started hearing some noises coming out of the basement, like pans falling and stuff.

‘She just ignored it, and thought it was the washing machine or something.

Anyways, a little later, she starts hearing the noises again.

She decides to call the police, and tell them she was hearing noises coming out of the basement at the house she’s babysitting at.

‘The lady at the station told her there’s a patroller in her area, and that he’ll be at the house in about 20 minutes. Anyways, in about 5 minutes, she hears a knock on the door.

She answers, and it’s a full swat team.

She asked, “I thought they were just sending a patroller..” and one of the guys told her “after you hung up the phone, we heard a second phone on the line hang up”.

‘Ended up there was a man in the basement, listening to the conversation.

The lady in the station waited and heard him hang up, then immediately sent the swat team to help.

3. 베이비시터 (이거는 좀 알려진 이야기)

한 소녀가 어느 날 아이를 봐 달라는 요청을 받고 알바 뛰러 감.

이런 일이 자주 있었기 때문에 익숙해진 상태임.

9시에 애들 재우라고 했기 때문에 재우고, 티비를 보면서 숙제를 하고 있었음.

그런데 지하에서 후라이팬이나 뭐 그런 물건 떨어지는 소리를 들었음

조금 있다가 다시 소리가 들림.

소녀는 무서워서 경찰에 전화를 했고, 지금 아기 보는 중인데 지하에서 이상한 소리가 난다고 함

경찰 콜센터에서 그 동네 담당하는 경찰 시켜서 보낼 테니 20분 정도 걸릴 꺼라고 함. (솔직하네)

5분 정도 지나니까 누가 문을 두드림.

그녀가 보니까 SWAT(미 경찰 특수 기동대) 팀이 와 있음.

“난 그냥 경찰 아저씨가 올 줄 알았는데요.” 그랬더니

한 SWAT 아저씨가 “너 전화 끊고 나서(전화는 계속 연결되어 있고) 다른 사람이 전화를 끊는 걸 들었음”

à 이거 옛날에 전화 두 대 있는 집에서 흔히 있는 일.

한 번은 나 전에 친구랑 독서실 간다고 하고 당구장, 오락실 갈려고 구라칠 준비하고 있엇는데, 형이
다른 쪽에서 듣고 있다가 내 방에 들어와 나 두들겨 팸….ㅎㄷㄷ

아무튼 지하실에서 어떤 남자 잡음. 콜센터 여자가 두 번 째 끊는 소리 듣고 바로 스왓팀 보냄.(센스 쩌네)

잡힌 아저씨 나랑 신세가 다르지 않음…ㅋㅋㅋ

 

2. Bike ride

‘I was about 15 minutes from finishing the night shift at work when there was a massive crash on one of the windows in the office so I get up and go to check it out.

Someone has thrown quite a sizable rock through one of the windows on the front of the building.

‘This is made especially weird because I’m working in the industrial district at 11:30 at night with none of the other businesses open.

I go back to my desk, put a quick call through to security to let them know and decide to head home.

‘As I’m leaving the building I’m freaking myself out about it more and more and end up running to my car, getting in and taking off.

I’m almost home and I’ve started to calm down a bit when I realise that I didn’t unlock my car when I got in.

It had been unlocked the whole time.

I do a quick check with my hand in the backseat for any possible murderers that might be hanging around there but there’s nothing there.

‘Fast forward 30 minutes: I’ve called a friend of mine who says he is out drinking so I decide I’m going to join him.

I jump on my bicycle and start riding over.

I’m doodling along the road on my bike, it’s a nice night and I’m in no big rush, just enjoying the moonlight when I hear someone riding behind me.

I straighten up and stick to one side of the road.

He passes me really slowly and, when he is right beside me, he shoots me a smile I can describe as purely f*****g insane.

I kind of flinch and am taken aback as he rides on.

That’s when I realise. He is riding my mom’s bike. ‘Needless to say, I sprint home.

When I get there, sure enough her bike is missing and one of my car’s doors is open.

2. 바이크 라이드

길어서 요약해야 겠음.

밤 근무를 마치고 집에 가려는데 빌딩 창문이 깨져 있고 커다란 돌이 건물 안으로 들어온 것을 봄. 늦은 밤이어서 이상하게 생각했는데, 어쨌든 경비원에게 사실을 알리고 퇴근을 함.

뭔지 모르겠지만 약간 무서운 생각이 들어서 서둘러 차로 가서 문을 열고 운전을 함.

집에 거의 다 도착할 때쯤 갑자기 차 문을 열을 때 잠겨있지 않았다는 것을 깨달음. 평소에는 항상 습관적으로 문을 잠그는 사람임.

혹시나 하는 생각이 들어서 자동차 뒷좌석을 손을 뻗어 살인자나 뭐 그런 뭔가가 있지 않나 체크를 함.

아무것도 없음. (영화를 좀 본 모양임)

집에 도착해서 삼십분 정도 지났을 까… 친구한테 전화를 함. 친구가 술 마시고 있다고 해서 거기로 가기로 마음먹음. 자전거를 타고 밤길을 즐기며 달리고 있었음.

그런데 뒤에서 다른 누군가가 자전거를 타고 오는 것을 느낌.

그래서 나는 속도를 좀 줄여서 천천히 가고 있을 때, 그 옆으로 자전거를 탄 사람이 천천히 앞질러가는데

완전 미칠 듯이 순수하고도 큰 웃음을 띠고 나를 계속 응시하며 지나감.

그 때 깨달았는데 그 사람이 타고 있는 자전거는 우리 엄마 꺼임

완전 식겁해서 자전거 방향을 틀어서 집으로 돌아 갔는데 당연히 엄마 자전거는 없고, 차 뒷문이 열려 있음

 

 

 

1. Vacation

‘I was on vacation in Ithaca with my boyfriend at the time.

We had literally, I’m talking 10 minutes, just gotten into town and stopped at a suspension bridge near Cornell’s campus.

I’m terrified of heights and, so, my boyfriend was coaxing me step by step over the bridge.

It was gorgeous and we stopped at the middle to take a picture.

‘On the side we had come from there was a parking lot with steps leading to the bottom of the gorge but on the far side there were hiking paths with no barrier.

A woman walked past us and offered to take a picture for us.

‘We declined and she smiled and walked quickly to the far side of the bridge where she smoothly jumped off into the gorge.

There was not a second of hesitation, it was almost like she expected the path to keep going.

1. 휴가

이타카(뉴욕 주에 있는 호수를 낀 지역, 코넬대학요가 있음))로 한 커플이 휴가를 즐기러 놀러 감

코넬대 근처에 현수교가 하나 있었는데 (문맥상 아래가 틈 사이로 보이는 흔들 다리 같은 느낌인 것 같음) 

나는 높은 게 무서워서 한 발 한발 가고 있었고 남친은 나를 잡아주면서 감.

여기 풍경이 괜찮았고 다리 중간에서 사진도 찍고 함

우리가 온 쪽은 계곡의 바닥까지 계간으로 연결 된 주차장이 있었고,
다리의 반대 쪽은 하이킹 길이 나 있었는데 거기에는 가드레일이나 손잡이 같은 것이 전혀 없었음.

그 때 어떤 여자가 와서 “사진 찍어 드릴까요?” 물었는데, 우리는 그냥 괜찮다고 함

그 여자는 미소를 지으며 빠르게 다리 저편으로 가다가 하이킹 길 끝에서 갑자기 확 사라짐

조금 있다가 사람이 땅에 부딪치는 소리가 남.

일말의 주저함도 없었던 그 여자는 거기가 절벽이 있는지 몰랐던 것 같음.

 

다음엔 좀 더 무서운 이야기를 찾아 봐야 겠다
